There's a new post over at the Offical Google Blog from Paul Buchheit, chief engineer for Gmail. Buchheit lists some interesting Manovichian longings for some trace, some remainder of the first email ever sent. Relatedly, he also presents a nice little history of the construction of Gmail.

I haven't been able to quite put into words how I feel about the situation in Asia. I'm absolutely gutted by what I hear. I've done the donation thing (be careful-- there's quite a few fakes out there right now), but I can't seem to grasp the scale of the event. Maybe I shouldn't be able to. But I do hope that America turns out for this like the world turned out for Katrina.
